Catalpa Tree House is a very cute, fully-furnished apartment with its own private outdoor entrance, in the upper story of a 100+ year old farmhouse in Helmsburg, IN. Conveniently located to Nashville (10 minutes away) with lots of cool shops, galleries, & restaurants; Bean Blossom (5 minutes) home of the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Music Festival, Plum Creek Antiques, and Brownie's restaurant; and Bloomington (30 minutes) featuring vibrant art and cultural events, as well as Indiana University's plethora of sporting events; and Columbus, (45 minutes) where you'll enjoy outlet shopping at Tanger Outlet Mall; and Indianapolis (60 minutes).
The owners (an early 40s couple with a young son) are the 5th generation to live in the Victorian-era farmhouse, and occupy the main floor of the house. Guests' privacy is of the highest priority, and the owners are a quiet family who respect their guests' need for rest and relaxation. However, if you would like advice on good places to eat, shop, and other places to visit, the owners are most happy to engage with you. The farmhouse is located on top of a hill...and still enjoys its heritage of being a working farm. You're welcome to take a walk back to the barn and see the cute goats as they graze in the pasture. You may occasionally see the farmer on his tractor off in the distance as he checks on fences or mows the pastures. From the deck, you'll be able to see the Indiana Railroad train, as it goes through the little village of Helmsburg.
You'll climb the stairs to find a nice deck with a hot tub, as well as a charcoal grill, and table & chairs for outdoor dining. Once you step inside the front door, an airy and open space that's bright, comfortable, and clean awaits. All the rooms are spacious and are decorated with vintage and up-cycled finds to add character. Soft carpet and comfortable furnishings will ensure that you will feel right at home. Pretty shades of beige, green, and blue are accented with brighter colors in pillows and artwork, and combine to create a restful atmosphere for your getaway in Brown County. Two cute sofas, a 40-inch flat screen TV, and a chair make for a good spot to watch a movie, or chat with your significant other.
The kitchen is completely furnished, right down to the forks...so bring along the food you want to cook and you'll be set. Cookware, dishes, a toaster, a blender, a coffee maker, electric range, full-size fridge, and microwave are all there to make your mealtimes easy. Adjoining the kitchen is the laundry room with a stacking high-efficiency washer & dryer. An iron and mini-size ironing board are also provided, if you are personally offended by wrinkles.
In the bedroom, the cozy queen bed is outfitted with crisp white percale sheets, and an antique dresser and a big closet will handle all the clothes you can pack. The bedroom has a chair for reading...or maybe sitting down and putting on your shoes
The full bath features a tub/shower combo, and plenty of fluffy towels. Catalpa Tree House comes with a starter supply of paper towel, toilet paper, and trash bags, as well as dish detergent, and travel-size soap and shampoo. You may, of course, prefer to bring your own supply of your favorite bath products.
There's a queen-size air mattress with extra pillows and blankets, just in case you need them for your sleeping comfort; and there are books, games, a DVD player, and stereo for the times you may want to hunker down and stay put.
Brown County has lots of entertainment options, from outdoor activities such as ATV tours, zip-lining, gold-panning, horseback riding, golf, mountain biking, and hiking. There are over 200 shops in Nashville (a 10-minute drive), plus artists' studios, craft galleries, as well as many restaurants from which to choose. We have several wineries and breweries to visit, and Brown County State Park, Yellowwood State Forest, and Lake Lemon, are all within 10 minutes of Catalpa Tree House. The Bill Monroe Music Park-Campground hosts several music festivals throughout the year, so come get your bluegrass and jazz on in beautiful downtown Bean Blossom...you'll be there within five minutes of leaving Catalpa Tree House's driveway. The Helmsburg General Store is practically a stone's throw from your seat on the deck, and a good place to pick up a Hunt Brothers Pizza, chicken wings, some beer, incidentals, fishing bait, or a lottery ticket.
**In the event of snowy weather, you should consider driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get up the hill to the farmhouse.
